798 Art District traces its origins to the North China Wireless Equipment Joint Factory, established during China’s First Five-Year Plan and once hailed as the “Cradle of New China’s Electronics Industry.” Through more than two decades of preservation, renewal, and adaptive reuse, this former industrial complex has evolved into an internationally renowned destination for contemporary art and fashion design. It has received numerous national and municipal honors, including designation as one of China’s first National Nighttime Culture and Tourism Consumption Clusters, a National Industrial Tourism Demonstration Base, a Beijing Tourism and Leisure District, and a Beijing First-Launch Vitality Center.
Today, 798 Art District spans over 500,000 square meters, including more than 70,000 square meters of Bauhaus-style architecture. As China’s largest arts-centered cultural industry cluster, it is home to over 600 institutions and businesses representing 19 countries and regions worldwide. From art museums, galleries, and cultural exchange centers to VR experiences, fashion design, technology, and media, this diverse creative ecosystem has made 798 a pioneering model for industrial heritage revitalization and mixed-use cultural development.
Each year, the district hosts thousands of cultural events, exhibitions, product launches, and debut showcases, including major citywide celebrations such as “Starts New Year with Art”, Beijing Art Season, and Beijing Art & Technology Week. Welcoming over 10 million visits annually, with international visitors accounting for approximately 30%, 798 continues to expand the possibilities of its historic industrial spaces. Home to China’s first dedicated virtual reality cinema space, the district also offers a growing range of art education programs, café experiences, and curated creative retail, bringing art, technology, and commerce naturally into everyday urban life.
