Potted Chrysanthemums

1950

SANYU

Oil on fiberboard

64×53 cm

Collection of the Private Collection

Potted Chrysanthemums is a large-scale artwork from SANYU's "Potted Flowers" series. It was specially selected by the artist to be exhibited at the "Jansonne Triennial Exhibition" in France in 1958. In this artwork, SANYU presents a lush and radiant Chrysanthemum potted flower with a robust and upright posture, resembling a portrayal of the artist's independent and unique life. The elegant and vibrant colors of the artwork reflect the art of Chinese lacquerware. The highly simplified dual-tone background of vermilion red and bright yellow is influenced by the abstract trends that emerged in Paris and the United States after World War II.
